PSHE

At St Michaels Primary School we want to equip the children with not just the academic skills, they will need but the necessary tools to lead the best possible life as emotionally mature individuals.

We use the Jigsaw PSHE scheme of work to connect the pieces of Personal, Social, Heath and well-being education. The programme teaches children and young people emotional literacy, social and lifelong skills, Relationships and Sex education and resilience in an age appropriate manner. The programme equips them for happier and healthier lives, giving them agency to make their way through the world.

It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Jigsaw aims to help children know and value who they really are and how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.

We dedicate an hour a week in every year group to ensure that the children receive personal, social, emotional and health education with a big focus on emotional literacy and mental health.  The sessions are fun and engaging and use colourful child friendly resources. Each session starts with a relaxing “calm me” session where we focus on breathing and relaxation. We then follow six units of work across the year beginning with a whole school Jigsaw assembly. The units are:

Term 1- Being me in my World

Term 2- “Celebrating difference”

Term 3- Dreams and Goals

Term 4- Healthy Me

Term 5- Relationships

Term 6- Changing me
