Welcome to Year 4.

We will begin the year with a topic looking at some of the geographical features of the United Kingdom. During this topic we will compare different regions across the country with the south west of the UK.  Later in the year we will explore the history of the Ancient Greeks, study the fascinating Stone Age before holding another arts term across the school.

In English we will be reading the story of How To Train Your Dragon, which differs subtly from the films the children may have seen. This will be the basis for writing our quest stories, as well as instruction writing that uses an emphasis on verbs. We are focusing closely on spelling and grammar in the children’s writing this year so please continue to support your child by practising words that are sent home alongside key high frequency words that your child finds tricky.

In maths, our initial work will be around place value, looking at how money, measures, time and Roman Numerals relate to this. Later in the term we will turn our attention to shape and calculation work. The children will be tested on their times tables every Friday, working through them in order so please practise these at home. You will be updated as to which times table we are working on each week.

Year 4 will also have the exciting opportunity to attend weekly swimming lessons. This is an opportunity for each child to continue to make progress in their swimming techniques from last year. Our swimming days will alternate between Mondays (meeting at the swimming pool) and Thursdays (coming to school as normal).

I look forward to a busy yet exciting year ahead!
