Welcome to Year 4.
We will begin the year with a topic looking at Mountains. The children will learn all about how they form and where they are located in the world. They will have the opportunity to create model mountains and work in groups to deliver presentations about what they have learned. The children will expand their geography knowledge further by learning about some of the geographical features of the United Kingdom. During this topic we will compare different regions across the country with the south west of the UK. Later in the year we will explore the history of the Romans, study the fascinating Ancient Greeks. During the Summer Term we have a creative Roald Dahl Topic. This promises to be a fun and exciting a cross-curricular topic.
We will be reading lots of great books this year including: Oliver & the Seawigs, The Firebird and Cogheart. These books will be the basis for writing our writing. We are focusing closely on spelling and grammar in the children’s writing this year so please continue to support your child by practising words that are sent home alongside key high frequency words that your child finds tricky.
In maths, our initial work will be around place value. Later in the term we will turn our attention to shape and calculation work. The children will be practising their timetables daily using Times Table Rock Stars. Pleas encourage your child to play on this at home. They are very welcome to challenge us to a battle! On the homework sheet, which will be sent home on Mondays, we will inform you of our times table focus for that week.
Year 4 will also have the exciting opportunity to attend weekly swimming lessons. This is an opportunity for each child to learn to swim or to continue to make progress in their swimming techniques. Our swimming days will alternate between Mondays and Wednesdays.
We look forward to a busy yet exciting year ahead!
