Phonics & Reading

Phonics Teaching

We teach phonics from Reception using the government recommended Letters and Sounds programme alongside the resources from Jolly Phonics. Year 1 and 2 follow the National Curriculum statements for the teaching of spelling and use the Spelling Shed scheme as well as Letters and Sounds.  In the Juniors, teachers provide the children with the teaching and learning they need using the Spelling Shed scheme for support.

The children in Year 1 take a Phonics Assessment Check in June annually.

At St Michael’s, we encourage reading for pleasure and information each and everyday. We use a mix of Oxford Reading Tree. Floppy Phonics and Project X from Reception up to the end of Year 4. After this, a lot of the children become free readers and are able to read books from the classroom library and from home if they so wish. We operate a reading reward scheme where children who read frequently are rewarded with certificates.
