We teach phonics from Reception using the government recommended Letters and Sounds programme alongside the resources from Jolly Phonics. Year 1 and 2 follow the National Curriculum statements for the teaching of spelling and use the Nelson Spelling scheme as well as Letters and Sounds. In the Juniors teachers provide the children with the teaching and learning they need using the Nelson spelling scheme for support.
The children in Year 1 take a Phonics Assessment Check in June annually. In 2015/16 93% of our children reached the expected threshold.
At St Michael’s we encourage reading for pleasure and information each and everyday. We use a mix of Oxford Reading Tree. Floppy Phonics, Project X from Reception up to the end of Year 4. After this, a lot of the children become free readers and are able to read books from the classroom library and from home if they so wish. We operate a reading reward scheme where children who read frequently are rewarded with certificates.
