St Michael's C of E Primary School

Sports Premium

Since 2013, the government has provided additional funding to primary schools to improve the provision of physical education (PE) and sport. This funding is provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and is ring-fenced for the spending on provision of PE and sport in schools.

1. Implementation

At St Michael’s Primary, we have developed a comprehensive and inclusive PE and sport programme designed to ensure all pupils, including those facing additional challenges, can access and benefit from physical education. Our key approaches include:

  • Broad and balanced curriculum: We offer a wide range of physical activities that cater to all interests and abilities, including traditional sports, dance, gymnastics, and outdoor adventurous activities.
  • Enhanced extracurricular offer: We run a diverse after-school club programme open to all, with a focus on increasing participation among underrepresented groups such as girls and pupils with disabilities. We also offer OPAL activities at lunchtime led by trained staff.
  • Use of external specialists: We collaborate with specialist coaches and local sports clubs to extend opportunities and provide expert instruction that complements our curriculum.
  • Celebration and promotion: We celebrate participation and progress in PE regularly through assemblies, newsletters, and displays, reinforcing the value of physical activity beyond competition.
  • Removing barriers: We provide necessary equipment, adapt activities for inclusivity, and support transport and costs for extracurricular participation.

2. Impact

We measure the success of our Sports Premium funding through specific, measurable targets and qualitative outcomes:

  • Increased participation: Aim for majority of pupils to attend at least one extracurricular physical activity club per term, including disadvantaged and SEND pupils.
  • Improved pupil fitness and wellbeing
  • Enhanced staff confidence and skills  improved confidence in teaching PE.
  • Progress in physical skills: Majority of pupils to meet age-related expectations in key physical skills by the end of the academic year, monitored through teacher assessments.
  • Broader curriculum engagement: Introduction of new activities or sports to enrich the curriculum and extracurricular offer.
  • Community links: Establish partnerships with local sports organisations to provide pathways for pupils post-primary school.
  • Positive culture: Increased visibility and celebration of PE achievements in school communications, leading to greater pupil motivation and parental engagement.

3. Sustainability and Next Steps

To ensure lasting impact and continuous improvement, St Michael’s will:

  • Embed PE and sport across the whole school culture: Continue to integrate physical activity into daily routines and cross-curricular learning
  • Regularly review and adapt provision: Use pupil voice, staff feedback, and data to refine the curriculum and extracurricular offer, ensuring it remains inclusive and ambitious.
  • Invest in staff development: Maintain a cycle of CPD, including mentoring from PE specialists, to build internal capacity and reduce reliance on external providers.
  • Maximise community engagement: Deepen partnerships with local clubs and organisations to provide sustainable pathways for physical activity beyond school.
  • Monitor funding impact: Conduct annual reviews of Sports Premium expenditure and outcomes, adjusting strategies to meet evolving pupil needs and OFSTED expectations.
  • Focus on mental health and wellbeing: Develop initiatives linking physical activity with wellbeing support, particularly for vulnerable pupils.

This approach ensures that the investment in PE and Sport Premium at St Michael’s Primary is purposeful, inclusive, and sustainable, directly supporting the health, wellbeing, and development of every child in our diverse community.
