Year 4

Welcome to Year 4

Year 4 is an exciting year full of opportunities for children to explore, question, create and grow in confidence.

At the heart of everything we do is our St Michael’s vision:

‘Enjoy the present, educate for the future, inspire with love.’

We encourage our children to enjoy their learning and the experiences they share together, develop the knowledge and skills they need for their future, and show kindness, respect and love to those around them.

Meet the Year 4 Team

Year 4 is taught by Mrs Duncan from Monday to Wednesday and Mrs Burch from Thursday to Friday, Mrs Hill supports the class, helping children with their learning and encouraging them to develop confidence and independence.

Our Learning

English

In English, we enjoy a rich range of high-quality texts, including Black Dog, The Firework-Maker’s Daughter, Omar, the Accidental Trouble Magnet, The Girl Who Stole an Elephant, The Boy Who Biked the World and Rumblestar. Our extended reading also includes The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.

These texts inspire a wide variety of writing opportunities. Throughout the year, children develop their skills through writing stories, myths, diary entries, newspaper reports, persuasive letters, information texts, instructions and poetry. We encourage children to become confident and imaginative writers who take pride in their work.

Maths

In Maths, children build their confidence and fluency across number and place value, calculation, fractions, measurement, geometry and statistics, while developing their reasoning and problem-solving skills.

A key focus in Year 4 is developing quick and accurate recall of multiplication and division facts. Children take part in daily times tables practice, building their confidence and fluency with multiplication facts up to 12 × 12. This regular practice helps prepare children for the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC), which takes place in June. We aim to make times tables practice positive and engaging so that children feel confident and ready to demonstrate what they know.

Our Wider Curriculum

Our wider curriculum takes us on some fascinating journeys. We explore European mountains, discover how the Ancient Greeks changed the world, investigate what the Romans left behind, and consider how we can challenge stereotypes.

As part of our History learning, the children will have the exciting opportunity to visit the Roman Baths in Bath, bringing their learning about Roman Britain to life. This memorable experience allows children to explore an important Roman site, discover what life was like during Roman times and see first-hand some of the incredible evidence the Romans left behind.

In Science, children investigate states of matter, animals including humans, electricity, sound, and living things and their habitats.

Children also have plenty of opportunities to be creative, active and curious through Art, Design Technology, Music, Computing and PE. In Design Technology, children develop their practical skills through exciting projects, including designing and making their own pizzas, creating Roman purses and windmills.

In Computing, children explore coding, data, media and online safety, helping them to become confident, responsible users of technology. Our PE curriculum provides opportunities to develop physical skills through dance, gymnastics, athletics, health and fitness, alongside activities that encourage creativity, teamwork and personal development.

Growing Together

Our RW and Jigsaw learning encourages children to think deeply about themselves, others and the wider world. We explore Christianity and Hinduism, religious festivals and important questions about faith and life’s journey. Through Jigsaw, we focus on celebrating differences, dreams and goals, healthy lifestyles, relationships and change.

Year 4 also has an important role within our school and church community. One of the highlights of the year is leading our Harvest Festival at St Michael’s Church. This special occasion gives the children an opportunity to come together, celebrate and give thanks, while developing their confidence in speaking and performing in front of others.

Throughout Year 4, we aim to nurture happy, curious, confident and independent learners who are willing to challenge themselves, support one another and take pride in their achievements.
